Example Digital Story

As I previously explained in my last post, my 3rd grade students will be creating a digital story explaining the life accomplishments of a Woman in History. Students will be researching using traditional resources and digital resources on our Wikispace page that contains selected websites. Students will be using Animoto Video to present their story. Students will need to focus on the most important facts that reveal who they are, what did they did, and how they influenced history.

Click the link to our Digital Story Wikispace Page and preview an example I've created to model my expectations to my students of the Digital Story Project. I decided to use Rosa Parks, a very common Woman in History, which none of my students were assigned to. Please let me know what you think, and what I can improve to make it better.

Here are some questions that can guide your comments:

If you were a 3rd grade student would you understand my expectations?
Does it seem inviting or engaging?
How do you feel about the length of the video?

Positive and/or Constructive Feedback is Welcome!

  1. Hello Alyssa,
Your Wiki page and your digital story were impressive. I think that you made a great choice with the Youtube video, and that the length, and content level for your third grade students is reasonable. I like that you included a list of resources that are informative and would increase student engagement due to their user friendliness.
Although this is a simulated activity, if you were going to use this in your classroom, I would suggest a connection to ELA, Social Studies, and Computer Science standards.
    Again, great product!

    1. Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate the positive comment about my Wikispace. It was my first time creating it and enjoyed it. As far as the standards incorporated for this activity, I would be tying in ELA and Social Studies Standards. As following: SS.3.G.4.4, SS.3.C.2.1, and LAFS.3.RI.1.3.

      Thank you again!

  2. Hello Alyssa,
Great job! I really liked your digital story. I think that the presentation was organized and put together well. I felt that the music really emphasized the story. I think that it is a good example for your students and the length was just right. After watching your video, I want to try to use the Animoto Video application. I want to create “how-to” tutorials for all of the applications that I have posted on my curriculum page. -Fred

    1. Thank you! I appreciate your feedback! Animoto Video is very simple to learn and students love working with the themes and song choices. Adding text and video is very user friendly. Hope you are able to work with it in the future!

  3. Wow, I really enjoyed your storytelling piece. I can tell you have studied storytelling or at least looked up effective techniques in creating the structure of a piece. I felt having only one sentence displayed at a time was really impactful, it allowed the viewer to really soak up the information presented. Having the pictures follow the words instead of having them on the same page was also a technique you used that I feel was meaningful.
If you were just using this presentation to aid in a history lesson I feel your students would get a lot out of it. The fact that you are taking it one step further and having them create their own piece is amazing. This is a grade appropriate assignment that really intertwines multiple subjects such as writing, reading and social studies.
Great work, thank you for sharing!

    1. Nicole,
Thank you for the positive Feedback! That is exactly why I love Animoto Videos for students to create awesome short movies. My 3rd graders need to really decided what is most important because it doesn't allow for a lot of text per slide.
      Thank you!

  4. Alyssa,

I'm so glad I checked out your project with Animoto Video! The music and transitions are very engaging and were what I felt like my project was missing. I also really liked your wikispace page. It seemed clear and not as cluttered as I felt like mine was. Great job! I definitely think your third graders would understand their expectations and the length of the video felt perfect for third graders.

    1. Mary,
Thank you for checking out my page and video! Animoto video is so awesome! My students love using it and it is very easy for them to follow. Also, I didn't want to overwhelm my 3rd graders, that is why I did add a lot of resources and information. First, they never read it all and second it can confused them more. With younger students the less is better, get them straight to the point! Thanks for commenting!

  5. Alyssa,
Excellent example of digital storytelling! The whole process was very clear and flowed very nicely! The activity seems appropriate for the grade level and would be great for an informational reading unit since there are no third grade standards for history. I loved that you used Animoto, which is something that I would love to use with my students. Great ideas!

  6. Alyssa,

I LOVED your digital storytelling example! You can tell a lot of work and effort was put into this piece. I enjoyed the type of software you used for the project. Do you feel Animoto was user friendly? Is this something your third grade students will be able to figure out? I felt the length of your video was fine, but as I watched I wondered how adding audio to your project would enhance it so much. What do you think? I also love that you included pictures in between your slides to prevent too much text. This is a great break for the students. Overall you did a wonderful job with your project! I know your students will enjoy watching your digital storytelling example.

    1. Bianca,
Thank you for commenting and adding some feedback! Animoto video is such a great tool for students to use. My students love working with it, and to answer your question, yes it is very user friendly and my 3rd graders learn and work on it independently. Once you model how to use it, they are quite quick to catch on. The only area that takes a little more instruction is how to add images. You should take a look and try it!

  7. Alysssa,
Great job on your digital example! I found the length of the video to be perfect to maintain engagement and sufficient evidence about the topic. Based on your expectations listed on the page, I feel as though each was accomplished. The inclusion of the pictures helped to chunk the content and illustrate your points. I enjoyed watching the video - great job Alyssa!

    1. Cory,
Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad to hear that the length was good! I just wanted to make sure my students are not overwhelmed with information, but not too short where they didn't learn much. My expectation is for my students to be able to create a story where they get the MOST important details across. Thank you!!!
